What is a lithophane photo light box?
Discover how a 3D-printed photo becomes a glowing keepsake, and how to create your own four-photo cube.
By Jeff & Christine ·A lithophane photo light box turns your photographs into a physical, illuminated keepsake. Instead of printing coloured ink onto paper, a lithophane uses variations in the thickness of a 3D-printed panel to recreate the light and dark areas of an image.
How the photograph appears
Thinner areas let more light through, while thicker areas block more light. Place a light behind the panel and those differences reveal the photograph. The result has a different character from a colour photo: it focuses on light, shadow and the details that make the moment recognizable.
The panels themselves are white. The glowing image you see comes from the light passing through them. Without backlighting, the photograph can look much less distinct.
What goes into our photo cube
Our Memories in a New Light cube uses four separate photo panels: the front, left side, right side and top. A black frame surrounds the white panels, and the included LED illuminates them from inside. It is supplied assembled as a plug-in product.
The cube has one standard size, 120 mm on each side, or approximately 4.72 inches. Keeping one size makes the ordering process easier: you can focus on choosing the photographs rather than choosing frame dimensions.
Choosing meaningful photographs
Family portraits, a favourite pet, a wedding moment or a memorable trip can make a personal combination. You can choose four images from one occasion or bring together different memories. Clear subjects and well-lit originals give you a better starting point than heavily blurred screenshots.
Creating your box
Open the Lithophane Maker, upload a photo for each position and adjust the crop. Check faces and important details near the edges before you order. The rotating preview helps you see how the four photographs sit together.
The preview is a guide to composition. The finished appearance also depends on the original image, the printed panel and the lighting around the box. Choose images you enjoy, check each crop carefully and create a keepsake that tells your own story.
